Obituary of Leroy Jennings

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, thought the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” Psalms 46:1-2


Leroy Jennings, affectionately known as “Gooley” was born June 11, 1934 in the Woodrow Community of Lee County, SC to the late James and Colzie Cooke Jennings, Sr.


Leroy “Gooley” received his education at the Woodrow School in Woodrow, SC.


Leroy “Gooley” accepted Jesus the Christ as his Savior and was a member of Mt. Olive AME Church and later in life became affiliated with Faith Deliverance Temple.

Leroy “Gooley” was a member of numerous horse clubs and his last membership was with the Sumter High Steppers. He worked many years as a loyal and dedicated truck driver for Seagars and Rivers Farms.


Leroy “Gooley” was united in Holy Matrimony to Rosa Lee Jennings and they were blessed with fifty years of togetherness.


In addition to his parents, Leroy was preceded in death by four sisters, Laney J. Davis, Mable J. Blandshaw, Irene Davis and Beatrice James Johnson and four brothers,  Fortune Jennings, James Jennings, Jr., George Jennings and Lucious Jennings.


Leroy “Gooley” transitioned from this life on Thursday, January 24, 2019 in Sumter, SC.


Leroy “Gooley” leaves to cherish his memory his dedicated wife of fifty years, Rosa Lee Jennings; three daughters, Dina Brunson, Michelle Brunson and Brenda Brunson; son, Yancy Jennings; sister, Frances Davis of Columbia, SC; two brothers, Mark Austin of Dalzell, SC and Luke Austin of New Haven, CT; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret Montgomery, Algie Green, Linda (Larry) Bradshaw, Frances Montgomery, Willie Jennings, Ivey Jennings and Fred Prescott; daughter-in-law, Shelia Jennings; special nieces, Patricia Ford, Minister Lillie Washington and Kathy Jennings and a host of other nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
