Obituary of Charles Wilson Simmons III

On the evening of May 11, 1971, a beautiful baby boy was born a month and a half too soon to Sonja Jean and the late Charles Wilson Simmons.  Chucky, which he was affectionately known by was born at The Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

Charles was always a very happy child; spiritual, kind and gentle, and most of all obedient.  Born into the Seventh Day Adventist faith, Charles attended Bethel SDA Church in Brooklyn, New York.  Then he and his mom moved to Bessemer, Alabama where he baptized into The First SDA Church of Bessemer where he served as deacon, choir member, usher, pathfinder member, basketball star.  Charles also sang in the Ensley High School Choir and Black History Choir. At the time of his demise, Charles was a member of the East Market St Seventh Day Adventist Church in Greensboro NC.

Charles was a graduate of Ensley Magnum High School class of 1989 in Birmingham, Alabama.  He also attended Jefferson State Community College. Charles was featured in “Who’s Who” in 1988. He was also a candidate for a basketball scholarship at Wake Forest University.  Charles also attended Shades Valley High School where he received an award for a paper bridge under the aspiring electrical engineer program for high school students.

Anyone who knew Charles knew him as the CD/Movie Man. Charles could mix you up the best music to your specification. Before illness struck in 1998, he worked at Family Connections as a Behavioral Specialist in Shelby County.  Before that he worked at Adamson Ford, Ernest McCarty Ford, NTB, and Burger King.

Charles took his final rest on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after 20 years of battling with a chronic illness.  He was surrounded by his mother and other family members.  Just before returning to the hospital for his final battle, body tormented with pain, he looked up at the EMT and said softly, “GOD GOT ME”.  Sleep on Charles, take your rest, God always had you.

He leaves four children to cherish his memories: Chiquita, Carl, Charles of Birmingham, Alabama and Jalen of Travis Airforce Base, California. five granddaughters; Ra’Niyah, Kenzie, Raegan, Leigha and Lauren. His devoted parents Sonja and Arthur Ayers. He is preceded in death by his father Charles Wilson Simmons and his grandparents; Ella and Silas Thomas, Frances and Sonny Webb and Rev. Charles L.
