Obituary of Dorothy Mae Washington

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray to the Lord, my soul he keeps. If I die before I wake, I pray to the Lord my soul he takes. Amen!"

On Friday, July 13, 2018, Mrs. Dorothy Washington had to yield to the Master's call. Her final hours were spent surrounded by family and friends whom she touched throughout her industrious and memorable life.

Mrs. Dorothy Washington was born on March 11, 1949, in Bishopville, SC, to the parents of Mr. Sammie Lee Fortune, Sr. and Mrs. Essie Mae Fortune. She grew up in Lee County and there attended the public schools.

Mrs. Dorothy Washington was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. L J Washington. With much tender loving and caring, they were blessed to raise five children.

As a child, her spiritual experiences began at New Zion AME Church. Later, after her health started failing, she moved in with her daughter in Sumter, SC. It was then, she started attending St. Paul Holiness church with her daughters and grandchildren. Her favorite songs were: "Beyond the Sky" and "Don't Forget the Family Prayer".

Throughout her adult life, she was employed working with peaches and working in the Home Health Care field. Her various employments caused her to relocate to Florida and Philadelphia. Her hobbies included: cooking, eating and traveling. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend. She always greeted you with a smile and never treated anyone like a stranger.

Dorothy Washington is survived by her husband, L J Washington; her children, Kennedy D. Washington, Shirletha W. (Thomas) Abrams, Anthony C. (Natasha) Washington, Caretha Washington, and Harry E. (Jenifer) Washington all of Sumter, SC; thirty-four grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; three siblings, Hattie Mae Fortune-Jackson, of Sumter, SC, Lucius (Teresa) Fortune and Sammie Lee Fortune, Jr. of Bishopville, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Jay Fortune, Walter Fortune and Willie James Fortune; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

The family is receiving friends at 5690 Alcott Drive Wedgefield, SC.
